Origin: Once a part of Mason, Greenville is one of the state's newest and smallest towns, incorporated in 1872. The town is located at the High Falls on the Souhegan River, whose plentiful water power provided the town with the state's first industries, making cotton and woolen goods.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,072 residents in 1880

Population Trends: Population growth in Greenville was below the statewide average over each of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a less than one percent decrease between 1990-2000 to a 25 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over the fifty year period, Greenville's population increased by a total of 944 residents, going from 1,280 in 1950 to 2,224 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Greenville was 2,260 residents, which ranked 125th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
